The Yamaha 6 String Theory Guitar Competition

Welcome to the 3rd Annual Yamaha 6 String Theory Guitar Competition, co-sponsored by Berklee College of Music, Crown of the Continent Guitar Foundation, Concord Records, Dave Grusin, Premier Guitar Magazine, Monster, James Stroud, Jazziz Magazine, D'Addario String Company, Music Connection, Flathead Lake Lodge, and Captain Fingers Productions.

Competition begins January 21, 2012 and ends on May 1, 2012 and is open to "Non-Professional Guitarists" (see Rules for details & definition of "non-professional").

We want to see 2 YouTube videos (no more than 5 min/each; no camera stops) of you playing with your band, a solo arrangement, duet performance, or any other performance that showcases your skills as a guitarist. You can enter in one of 6 categories: Rock, Blues, Jazz/Fusion, Country, Acoustic and Classical/Flamenco.  We are looking for more than speed and great guitar chops, so send us something unique and inspiring that displays your musicianship and your virtuosity!

Here's how to sign up:

Go to the Sign-In section to fill out our online application and submit your $25 application fee.

Within 24 hours you will receive username and password that gives you access to your account.

Prepare 2 videos (5 min maximum per video, no camera stops) and upload them to www.youtube.com.

Login to your account in the "Contest Sign In" section & embed your video.

Our panel of online judges will evaluate all the videos and announce the 36 semi-finalists no later than June 1, 2012.

36 semi-finalists will be chosen spread out among the categories. Our panel of online judges will evaluate all videos and announce the 6 finalists by end of July 2012. The 6 finalists will win a full scholarship to the Crown of the Continent Guitar Workshop and Festival. At this festival, they will attend workshops and compete in a live performance on August 29, 2012 in Bigfork, Montana. Room, board & $500 cash for travel to Montana awarded to each of the 6 finalists (see Rules for details).

The Grand Prize Winner will win a Yamaha guitar (acoustic, classical, or electric), a guitar endorsement from Yamaha Guitars, $1,000 worth of gear from D'Addario String Company and/or Planet Waves accessories and a Monster endorsement plus Diesel Vektr headphones.

The Grand Prize Winner will also win a seven day vacation stay at the Flathead Lake Lodge (up to 2 persons total) in Bigfork, Montana ($8,000 value) and a possible recording contract opportunity from Concord Records! (see Rules- Concord Record Rights)

Grand Prize Winner to also receive one year of "Professional Mentoring" from Lee Ritenour -- The overall winner of the competition will have access to up to 10 hours of advice and consultation about his/her music and career from Lee Ritenour (either in person at Lee's studio and/or over the telephone/Skype)!

1st and 2nd Runners Up will receive: a Yamaha guitar (acoustic, classical, or electric), a guitar endorsement from Yamaha, $100 worth of D'Addario strings, and Diesel Vektr headphones.

3rd, 4th, and 5th Runners Up will receive: A Yamaha guitar (acoustic, classical, or electric), $100 worth of D'Addario Strings, and Diesel Vektr headphones.

All 6 finalists (i.e. Grand Prize Winner and 5 Runners Up) shall also receive a full scholarship to The Crown of the Continent Workshop and Festival Aug. 26 - Sept. 2, 2012 in Bigfork, MT (room/ board provided) The 6 finalists will also win a $500 cash prize to use towards travel to Montana. Workshop artists-in-residence and faculty including Lee Ritenour.
